Honu’ea or Hawksbill Turtle is native to Hawai’i. The species is considered to be endangered but is slowly growing thanks to conservation efforts particularly on the Big Island of Hawai’i where they are protected by law. The Hawksbill can grow up to 250 pounds and feeds mostly on green sea moss or sponges. Their nesting period runs from July to October. Building the nest and laying eggs takes several hours and they can easily be seen along the coast.

Cooler temperatures aloft and lack of a Coastal Eddy prohibited formation of the Marine Layer last night. Warmer temperatures and clear skies are forecast for the rest of the week. This is a welcome change from our traditional “June Gloom” here in Los Angeles. This shot was taken at 6:15 a.m. from approximately 2.5 miles Northeast of Downtown Los Angeles. The B-1B Lancer Strategic Bomber makes a High Speed Low-Level Fly-By over the Rose Bowl in Pasadena at the beginning of the USC vs Texas Championship Game. I wish it could have been a bit sharper but it was getting dark and I had the camera pushed to 1600 ISO using a 100-300mm Zoom. Exposure was 1/40th sec @ f5.6

To start off the 2005 Rose Parade, there was a beautiful flyby of the B-2A Bomber, accompanied by an F-15E Strike Eagle and an F-16C Fighting Falcon. In this view, as they depart into the sun, the F-15E is on the left and the F-16C is on the right. They flew along the parade route from West to East.

While Weather Photography is an ongoing quest, I occasionally get off on tangents and focus on other subjects. Current Project: Humming Birds. Boy, are these guys tough to catch! The Mexican Sage (Salvia Leucantha) in my yard really attracts Humming Birds.

Several storms out in the Pacific were beginning to affect Northern California with heavy rain. These same storms were causing heavy surf all along the coast. A large west-northwest swell continued to affect the outer coastal waters of Southern California today. Breakers of 8 to 12 feet, with locally higher sets, pounded the coastline. Water can be seen here making it to the top of the beach past the burm.
