There are currently thirteen working telescopes near the summit of Mauna Kea. They include the largest optical/infrared telescopes in the world (the Keck telescopes), the largest dedicated infrared telescope (UKIRT) and the largest submillimeter telescope in the world (the JCMT). In this photo taken near the 13,796 Foot Summit you can see (from left to right) the Subaru Telescope, the 2 W.M. Keck Telescopes and the NASA Infrared Telescope Facility.

Rising gradually to approximately 13,679 feet above sea level, Mauna Loa is the largest volcano on our planet. This enormous volcano covers half of the Island of Hawai`i and by itself amounts to about 85 percent of all the other Hawaiian Islands combined. Mauna Loa is among Earth’s most active volcanoes, having erupted 33 times since its first well-documented historical eruption in 1843. Its most recent eruption was in 1984. This photo was taken from the 13, 796 foot Summit of Mauna Kea.

Sundown Dunes1890 viewsThe setting Sun was casting an orange hue on the Sand Dunes at Dumont. Dumont is located 30 miles North of Baker CA near the Southern tip of Death Valley. It was a windy day and the winds in the upper atmosphere were affecting the clouds. I m not sure I would classify this cloud as Lenticular but it was getting close. Taken 3/25/06.
