Moon Passing2005 viewsI was up at the crack of dawn 2/22/06 to get a few shots of the Sunrise over the Sea Of Cortez. The Last Quarter Moon was setting as the sky was beginning to brighten. I heard a jet high overhead and turned just in time to catch this shot of the jet and it's contrail passing the Moon. Taken with a Canon Digital Rebel using a 100-300 Zoom Lens. ISO 400, 1/640 second at f8.0

Mauna Loa1880 viewsTaken 4/6/06
Rising gradually to approximately 13,679 feet above sea level, Mauna Loa is the largest volcano on our planet. This enormous volcano covers half of the Island of Hawai`i and by itself amounts to about 85 percent of all the other Hawaiian Islands combined. Mauna Loa is among Earth’s most active volcanoes, having erupted 33 times since its first well-documented historical eruption in 1843. Its most recent eruption was in 1984. This photo was taken from the 13, 796 foot Summit of Mauna Kea.

Quebec 1 and Quebec 2. Those are the Radio Callsigns for the two Super Scoopers from Canada. Every year, beginning Oct 1, these 2 amazing airplanes are loaned to the Southern California area during our Fire Season. They were at the Hollywwod Burbank Airport and special permission was given to use them early to fight this fire. They fly to a nearby lake, or even the ocean, and scoop up 1000's of gallons of water which they precisely drop on the hot spots.

Nice contrast of the white seagull against the clear blue sky of Baja California. The seagulls were looking for a handout.

A Bird In The Hand . . . 621 viewsThanks for the heads up from Altadena WeatherCam viewers Mario & Brenda Miralles. This Black Phoebe stopped by to visit Mr. Bill this morning. I’ve seen them searching for flies around the yard (which they are good at). I didn’t know they liked to hang out with Mr. Bill also.

Hawaiian Monk Seal 11710 viewsKnown to the native Hawaiians as ʻIlio-holo-i-ka-uaua, or "dog that runs in rough water". Its common name derives from its round head covered with short hairs, giving it the appearance of a medieval friar. The name may also reflect the fact that it lives a solitary existence relative to other species that collect in large colonies. When they come up to shore, the locals place ropes around them to keep people at a safe distance.

Hawaiian Monk Seal 21701 viewsThe Hawaiian monk seal is among the most endangered of all seal species. The population of Hawaiian monk seals is in decline. In 2008, it was estimated that only 1200 individuals remain. This Monk Seal was seen on Poipu Beach. He looks very content, enjoying the warm Spring Sun.
