The Indian Mongoose was originally brought to Hawaii in 1883. It was believed that the mongooses (no, not mongeese) would help control the rising Rat population on the Islands, but the mongoose is mostly active during the day while the rats were active at night and they didn't have much of an impact on the rats. All Together Now2306 viewsTaken 1/23/06
Strong winds buffeted Southern California last night and this morning causing wide spread damage. Fallen trees, downed power lines, etc. Sustained winds at my station were 30 mph with gusts as high as 42 mph. Combined with extremely low humidity, these conditions have prompted a Red Flag Fire Alert. These palm trees were all leaning to the South as the winds roared out of the North.

Green Anole 12004 viewsThis species is native to North America, where it is found mainly in the southeastern parts of the continent. But, the species has been introduced into Hawaii. That’s where I saw this one, in a garden near Poipu Beach. He was feasting on insects and didn’t mind me photographing him. They can change color in a matter of seconds and have been inaccurately called the “Chameleon” of North America. In this shot he is perched on a White Orchid waiting for the next morsel to fly by. Lowe Fire 11990 viewsA small brush fire in Altadena, CA, 8/26/07, was brought under control quickly by Angeles National Forest and Los Angeles County Fire Crews. Due to the rough terrain, the fire was fought primarily from the air with the support of Camp Crews. In this photo, one of the new BlackHawk Helicopters used by Los Angeles County Fire snorkels water from a "Pumpkin" set up at a nearby Helispot. The BlackHawks can carry 1,000 Gallons compared to 300 carried by older Helicopters.
