3045 viewsWestern Fence Lizards were everywhere. They seemed to sit just outside the doors and watch us come and go. They were about 4-5 inches long and very curious.

Mauna Loa2115 viewsTaken 4/6/06
Rising gradually to approximately 13,679 feet above sea level, Mauna Loa is the largest volcano on our planet. This enormous volcano covers half of the Island of Hawai`i and by itself amounts to about 85 percent of all the other Hawaiian Islands combined. Mauna Loa is among Earth’s most active volcanoes, having erupted 33 times since its first well-documented historical eruption in 1843. Its most recent eruption was in 1984. This photo was taken from the 13, 796 foot Summit of Mauna Kea.

Hummer2332 viewsPhot taken 10/8/05 in my front yard. The Mexicam Sage attracts quite a few Humming Birds. This year (2006) we had as many as 8-10 at a time fighting over the bush's beautiful purple blooms.

2137 viewsThe radio looked so simple. No "bells and whistles". It must have been tough sending CW (morse code) while they were in flight. It was pretty bumpy.

Lowe Fire 22120 viewsA small brush fire in Altadena, CA yesterday was brought under control quickly by Angeles National Forest and Los Angeles County Fire Crews. The "LOWE" fire was fought primarily from the air with the support of Camp Crews.
In this photo a Helicopter makes a water drop right over a Camp Crew working the fire below.

This photo was taken by my Daughter Whitney Westphal.

Manhattan Beach Pier2643 viewsTaken 12/20/05
Several storms out in the Pacific were beginning to affect Northern California with heavy rain. These same storms were causing heavy surf all along the coast. A large west-northwest swell continued to affect the outer coastal waters of Southern California today. Breakers of 8 to 12 feet, with locally higher sets, pounded the coastline. Here you see the waves crashing against the end of the Manhattan Beach Pier
